GLASGOW, Scotland — Timothy Weah, the U.S. striker and son of former AC Milan star now President of Liberia George Weah, scored on his debut for Celtic in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.
What an introduction to life in Glasgow! Tim scored only 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute for his Celtic debut, taking his chance incredibly well.
The 18-year-old Weah, who is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, came on in the 69th minute and netted in the 83rd. He raced onto Dedryck Boyata’s through-ball and slotted his shot past advancing goalkeeper David Hutton as cup holder Celtic beat Airdrieonians 3-0 to reach the fifth round.
George Weah was a star striker for PSG and Milan in the 1990s, and in 1995 became the first, and still the only, African-born player to win FIFA’s world footballer of the year award and France’s Ballon d’Or. Weah was elected president of Liberia in 2017.
Tim was born in New York. He has made eight appearances for the U.S. team, scoring in a friendly against Bolivia in May, and can also play as an attacking midfielder.
Only 18-years old, the eight-cap American international is seen as one of the brightest prospects in the game at the moment, with many predicting a massive future ahead.
With a star-studded front line currently at the club, PSG decided to loan the forward out this month in order to get some much-needed playing time at first team level. With Celtic badly in need of more options up front, it seemed like a match made in heaven.
Things could not have gotten off to a better stat for the youngster. Having been introduced as a substitute against Airdrieonians in a fourth round Scottish Cup tie, it did not take long for him to open his account for the club.
Tim showed wonderful awareness to get in behind the defense, before being picked out by a wonderful pass from Dedryck Boyata. The American lad made no mistake in the finish, calmly poking it beyond the on rushing goalkeeper.
Hoops fans will be hoping to see plenty more of this over the coming months, with the club still competing on multiple fronts. Fans seem to have a real title race on their hands in Scotland for the first time in a number of years, while a Europa League tie with Spanish giants Valencia is also quickly approaching.
Tim will no doubt have a big say on Celtic’s fortunes during the remainder of the season, and the early signs could not be any more encouraging.
