Monrovia – The Liberia National Police (LNP) through Inspector General (IG) Patrick Sudue, has made a donation of assorted items including seven full packages of hijab and thirty 25kg bags of rice as the LNP’s contribution to the Muslim community during the month-long observance of Ramadan this year.
Ramadan is the Arabic word for the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, sometimes rendered as Ramazan in other languages. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims won’t eat or drink between dawn and sunset, a rite referred to as fasting, which is important during Ramadan as it allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to Allah, or God.
Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives. The other pillars are faith, prayer, charity and making the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.
Ramadan is also a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. During this time, Muslims will endeavor to make a special effort to connect with their communities and reach out to the needy.
IG Sudeue made the donation Monday following a meeting with the Muslim community here – the meeting centered on the provision of security for all Muslims across the country, during the Ramadan period of fast and prayer.
Liberian Muslim community Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abubakar Mory D. Sumaworo; the head of the Imam Council, Iman Ali Krayee; Muslim Council Secretary General, Sheikh Arkibu Sheriff; as well as some prominent Muslims in attendance at the meeting lavished praises on IG Sudue for what they called his exceptional leadership skills in protecting lives and properties.
During the meeting, Muslim Council Secretary General, Sheikh Sheriff expressed appreciation for the leadership of the LNP for what he termed prioritizing the Muslim community especially during the observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, adding that there are lots of security concerns during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Secretary General, Sheikh Sheriff called on IG Sudue to continue providing effective security services for the Liberian people.
Imam Council head, Imam Krayee also applauded IG Sudue for his performance on the job, recounting the police IG’s strides in providing security for Muslims during last year’s observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Due to the effective deployment of police officers at various mosques, last year’s Holy Month of Ramadan was observed without casualties, Imam Krayee noted, while expressing hope that this year’s security provision to the Muslim community would go a long way in ensuring a more peaceful observance of Ramadan.
In turn, IG Sudue appreciated the Muslim leaders for recognizing his leadership role, stating that his idea of providing security for Muslims at various mosques is aimed at creating am enabling environment where they can commute to and from their various places of worship without being attacked or robbed of their personal effects.
He recalled that in timer past, Muslims have been victimized during the observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan, indicating that some Muslims have even been physically attacked, in the process, he said some lost their belongings such as shoes, slippers, phones and other personal effects at the hands of their assailants.
But since the advent of his administration’s Ramadan security operations, IG Sudue bragged that a big success has been scored in ensuring total security for all Muslims throughout the length and breadth of the country.
