Monrovia – The Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), says it has augmented the size of the security detail at the residence of the group’s Commander-In-Chief, Emmanuel Gonqupoi, following an unexpected visit paid there by unknown men on Monday.
CIC Gonquoi told PUNCH FM/TV online service Monday that he does not trust the Liberia National Police (LNP) with his safety and personal security, therefore, his group has assembled several men from the “EFFL Army” to provide security for him and his family.
He said the way the police have begun proceeding with the matter regarding some unknown men evading the privacy of his home on Monday afternoon, is unprofessional and unbecoming of state security officers.
“The EFFL security is at the house to increase security, which is good. We cannot trust government security – by their attitude, they are more of a partisan security than a national security, which is bad, said Gonquoi, who lamented that instead of dispatching officers to his home which he described as the crime scene, the LNP only gave him a telephone number to call, in the event the unknown men return to effectual their threat against him and his family.
PUNCH FM/TV online service reported hours ago that the Congo Town residence of CIC Gonquoi was unceremoniously visited by some strange men, who went in search of the EFFL’s CIC and national secretary-general, Ernest Moibah, Jr., for unexplained reasons.
The unknown men, being unable to see both men physically, threatened to return with 12 men who they said would be armed with guns. They did not, however, disclose the purpose for their first visit nor for the promised return visit.
The incident occurred barely two days after the celebration of the first anniversary of the existence of the EFFL in Kakata, Margibi County, where the Commander-In-Chief Emmanuel Gonquoi was very vocal against the George-Weah led government and those he described as “conservative political figures.”
“We wrote our complaint and they only gave us a telephone number and said anytime the people come we should call them – instead of coming to see the crime scene,” Gonquoi said.
Upon being alerted by his private security guards that some strange men had on Monday afternoon stormed his residence and were in search for him, and that they have threatened to return with guns, CIC Gonquoi said he immediately called up deputy director of police for operations, Col. Marvin Sarkor, who advised him to report the matter at the nearby police station.
He then immediately proceeded to the LNP ZONE-3 Police Depot which is a stone’s throw away from his residence, according to Gonquoi, who added, “when I went to the nearby police station, the police only gave me their contact number, asking me to get camera phone for my security, so that the next time they come they can take their picture – could you imagine that?”
But when contacted, police spokesman, H. Moses Carter said “That is Gonquoi’s side of the story”, stating that officers of the LNP are currently on the alert to avert any attack against CIC Gonquoi and his family.
Carter told PUNCH FM/TV online service that the job of the police is to protect lives and properties, and to ensure the protection of every Liberian; a job he said the LNP was executing impartially in the case of Gonquoi’s complaint of alleged threat on his life by some unknown persons.
He said upon receiving Gonquoi’s complaint, the police immediately embarked upon intelligence gathering, as has always been the case when such matters are brought to the attention of the LNP.
By Gonquoi informing the police about the incident at his home on Monday, Carter said the police were already on the alert, and that what the EFFL CIC was told when he was given the telephone number, was only from an information-sharing perspective, which the police spokesman said Gonquoi may have misconstrued.
Asked whether the police have visited the residence of CIC Gonquoi since he complained of unknown men paying his home an uninvited visit, Carter said, “Since Honorable Gonquoi raised the issue, there has been no confirmed attack on his home – but police are on the alert
