In the wake of the recent US$100 million drug bust carried out by the Liberian security forces, with assistance from the United States government, some concerned constituents of electoral District #13 Montserrado County have expressed their frustration to PUNCH FM over how their constituency has become the harbor of drugs in the county. The concerned residents of District #13 are also accusing their lawmaker, Representative Edward Papay Flomo, as being heavily involved in the sale of harmful drugs across the district and beyond.
According to some of the residents who spoke with our correspondent, they alleged that there is a high increase of drugs selling in their communities as ghettos continue to sprout in communities.
“PUNCH FM, thank you for reaching to us, but the situation of drugs in our district is a serious matter and most of our children are out of school because they have become drug addicts,” one of the concerned community dwellers said.
The district #13 residents further disclosed that the proliferation of drugs in their communities has contributed to the high rate of criminal activities in their district, something which is negatively impacting on living condition in the constituency.
It can be recalled that on October 1, 2022, the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) and National Security Agency (NSA) jointly arrested a 31-year-old Bissau-Guinean national identified as Malam Conte with a huge quantity of raw cocaine worth US$100m concealed among frozen goods owned by SONIT Inc. around Topoe Village in District 13.
A former District #13 representative aspirant of the opposition Unity Party, Cornelia Kruah-Togba is equally alarmed over the high prevalence of harmful substances in the district, stating that drug is a new war waged against her generation.
“This is a National Emergency. The security implications are high. The economic risks are inevitable. Let’s keep speaking against this and encouraging our young people to resist drugs”, Cornelia noted.
Meanwhile, when PUNCH FM contacted District Representative Flomo via Whatsapp, he failed to respond.
