Mumbai – A 20-year-old Liberian nursing student, Nuiker Varteikai, who had difficulty in walking since the age of seven, was diagnosed with end-stage Arthritis and worn out joints.
Doctors in Liberia were unable to diagnose her medical condition, prompting members of a local church to helped the 20-year-old, to get treatment from a Mumbai, India based hospital.
While Varteikai underwent right hip and left knee replacement, in a single sitting, she can now walk limping after more than 10 years.
In the past, Varteikai experienced constant pain in her hips and knees, while she was treated by doctors in Liberia, but to her dismay, the right diagnosis of her ailing condition was unable to be found by medical practitioners in the country.
But about a month ago, Varteikai was evaluated by the doctors at Fortis Hospital in Mumbai, where she was diagnosed with end-stage arthritis and worn out joints.
Fortis Hospital’s Dr Sachin Bhonsle, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, said, “She underwent a right hip and left knee replacement with high-quality ceramic coated prosthetic joints. Before she came for the treatment, she was partially disabled,” adding that post-op her physiotherapy sessions commenced and she was discharged from the hospital within a week.
