MONROVIA, Liberia – Former Liberian interim president Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer, has raised concerns over the use of social media in inciting violence during the Nigeria’s forthcoming elections.
Nigeria goes to the polls on 16 February, commencing with the Presidential election and National Assembly Election.
Dr. Sawyer, speaking at a one-day peace conference organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, under the theme ‘Peaceful Elections and National Development,’ held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, commended former President Jonathan for his role in sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
The Liberian ex-president, who gave an opening remark, said the challenges that may persist in electoral process include the use of digital media.
He said, “Social media poses significant challenges and increases the risk of incitement and conflict. It requires robust countermeasures by civil organizations and peace committee.”
“The role of the media, though sometimes annoying, is vital and should be protected,” Dr. Sawyer stressed.
