Monrovia – Several Liberians continue to react on social media, regarding news that a staff member in the office of Grand Bassa County senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, had offered her a US$100 gift for the lawmaker to buy gasoline.

PUNCH reported Thursday that an unnamed Senate staffer working with the Grand Bassa County senator, had telephoned her stating that she was being waited upon at their Capitol Building office, to purchase gasoline for her; a gesture that rarely takes place in the employee-employer relationship in Liberia, a nation plagued by high poverty rate.

Due to poverty, many Liberians, whether employed or not, most times look up to those in the upper echelon of the country’s economic ladder, as a means of securing the necessities of life – an estimated 64 percent of Liberians live below the poverty line, of whom 1.3 million live in extreme poverty.

On Wednesday, Senator Kangar-Lawrence posted on her official Facebook page, that an employee in her office had called to inquire whether she was on her way to work, as she was being awaited by the staffer to buy gas [for her car].

The Bassa senator wrote: “Honorable are you coming to the office today because i want to buy you gas – Message from my employee! This made my day!”

Senator Karnga-Lawrence, on Wednesday, later posted on Facebook disclosing that the staff member had finally made good the promise to buy her gas, with the Bassa lawmaker accordingly posting a photograph that displays two separate banknotes of US dollar in the $50 denomination, stating, “My gas money was given.”

Well, following those posts, reactions continue to pour in via social media, as several Liberians are responding to the lawmaker staffer’s magnanimity in positive manners.

Many of those reacting to the news are not just heaping praises on the Capitol Building employee who carried out such thoughtful act, but they are as well commending Senator Karnga-Lawrence for what many attribute to the lawmaker’s good leadership style, for placing her in the position to get in return from her subjects dividends of what she has invested in them.

In reaction to the staffer’s gesture, GlanGlan Davis writes: “Honorable you are a humble lady and doing great things for your people. The employee sees that and wants to reciprocate…more blessings for you Senator I follow you and applaud you for all you are doing for the people of Liberia.”

Referring to Senator Karnga-Lawrence regarding what might have triggered the employee’s action, Williette Lysander  said: “you’ve proven to be more than just a boss. Keep it up!”

Like Willette, who believes it’s Senator Karnga-Lawrence’s good leadership traits that bagged her such a gift, Vera Walker also thinks so, as she writes, “Senator your gift is making room for you oo…”

As the comments continue, in reaction to the Bassa lawmaker staffer’s gift to the boss, it is becoming increasingly clear that the view that Senator Karnga-Lawrence is a ‘good leader’ hence, she’s well-deserving of such gift or even bigger ones is a shared opinion for most of those reacting to the news.

Amb Jarlawah A. Tonpo, press director at the Liberian Senate writes: “Sen. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence you deserve more than that in my view. You have proven to be one of my best. Despite being a Boss, a Mother, a Sister, a Friend, a political leader of an Institution, an Administrator and a wife of a Friend (Rep. Adolph A. Lawrence) your interactions, your ability to lead, your willingness to listen and accept from people ‘s ideas qualify you for a deserving Prayer of more wisdom to lead. So Yes, that Staff did not make any mistake. Trust me, bigger than this is awaiting you.”

Tonpo was followed by many others with similar view:

Beatrice Karnga Gray – “That was thoughtful!!”

Mustapha Kanneh – “Good pay good.”

Hilary Mentoe – “It’s someone you made.”

Emmanuel Suprise Whea – “This is what happen when a leader leads with empowerment and love for people….”

Tee Mass Blam- “o U are definitely making an impact sis.”

Roland Rookie Kwao Lawrence – “You’re always favor my SIL”

Veta Nina Dennis-Umoja – “Ley Boss Lady da good Boss Lady, she’s being given her flowers.”

Comfort Son – “The grace of the Lord is with you mother have a bless day…more to come.”

Howbeit, it is not just the senator who is getting all the praises, the unknown staff member too is being heralded for his gesture.

Eugene Ricks had this to say about the staffer: “Very scarce offer at the level of the Capitol Building…:”, with James Nyamen declaring that, “only an employees with good upbringing does that mama.”

John Kollie says the employee’s action is “A great message indeed. Liberia needs more of such employees,” whereas, unknown to the unnamed staffer, this action is serving as recommendation for a new job, just in case the need arises, as Fred Bass tells Senator Karnga-Lawrence, “If you have to cut down staff, please send him/her my way.”

As at the time of this report, more comments continued to pour in regarding the Bassa senator’s post on her staffer’s goodwill towards her, with the reaction button below her Wednesday post being hit 81 times by those who have taken interest in the action of the unnamed Senate staffer.
