Monrovia – Almost 18 months in his administration, President George Weah, no doubt, is faced with plethora of challenges, chiefly among which is finding the solution to the country’s shrinking economy that is having an adverse effect of excruciating hardship on the people of Liberia.
But interestingly, in all of these, officials of his government especially those who are his supporters, including members and sympathizers of his political party, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) are even making matters worse, by not in most instances living up to the task of public confidence reposed in them, neither have they the courage to boldly let the president know that all is not well, and as a result, many Liberians are agonizingly enduring untold hardship and are therefore disenchanted.
Results coming in from the recent Montserrado House of Senate and District #15 House of Representatives by-elections are even more indicators that the people are disenchanted, as many reportedly went to the polls to purposely cast protest votes against the ruling party’s candidates in both by-elections, in a county once regarded as the CDC’s stronghold.
Thursday, CDC chair Mulbah Morlu in a statement, belatedly acknowledged pitfalls in the Weah’s administration and the regime’s inability to so far deliver to the Liberian people the party’s campaign promise of “change”, stating that now was the time for the ruling party to change course, as far as governing the state and delivering to the people are concerned.
He stressed that now was the time for the national executive committee of the CDC to swallow what he called the bitter pills and take some hard decisions both in government and in the party.
Morlu admitted that there is a pressing need to empower Liberians, adding that such need can no longer be sugarcoated by the ruling party.
“The moral demands to empower our people is a fierce urgency that remains our first line of defense as we serve our country,” he said.
Morlu added that the way to do so, will be by officials of the CDC serving in both the Legislative and the Executive Branches of the Government of Liberia (GoL) living in accordance with the George Weah-led government’s Pro-Poor Agenda or, vacate the government and the CDC.
“We have reached the point where we will separate party actions from the actions of some officials of government, where necessary,” Morlu declared, stating, “the period for honeymoon is over. The jobs we gave to you is to help our President succeed and not to undermine our hard-earned gains.”
Morlu described President Weah as a popular individual with a good heart for all Liberians, but noted that the president needs to be helped by those around him in order to deliver for the people of Liberia.
Now, a friend of President Weah, businessman cum politician, Musa Hassan Bility, says he pities the president over the hard choices he has to make regarding sticking with those he has been looking up to as ‘loyalists’ who have so far let him down or turns to individuals from the political opposition bloc, give them a call-up to government to right the wrongs in his administration and move the country forward.
“For once, I pity my Friend, the PRESIDENT. He’s now faced with the tough choices of either digging deeper within where he finds the usual comforts of love and loyalty or reaching out to the greater society and opposition community where he faces the challenge of being told like it is,” Bility wrote on his official Facebook page Friday.
Bility, a Muslim, a religion President Weah has been publicly identifying with on many occasions since he assumed power, stated that he is praying for the Liberian leader to make what he calls the right call.
Bility, a former executive of the former ruling Unity Party, who switched over to the opposition Liberty Party during the 2017 elections, and supported Weah and his CDC in the second round of the 2017 presidential polls, noted that turning to his base where he’s revered and adored will further isolate President Weah’s government and increase pressure on him leading to the country’s 2020 midterm election, whereas, reaching out to the opposition bloc and the greater Liberian society to ensure inclusiveness and bring in the needed expertise, where needed, could also estrange him from his base where Bility says loyalty and love are in abundance for the president.
Howbeit, Bility is of the belief that in any case, “this is the hour of choice” for President Weah, cautioning the Liberian leader that this is a moment his leadership is called into action.
“Definitely, whatever decision the President makes in these moments will define his Presidency,” Bility wrote, adding, “I can only hope that he makes the right calls knowing that it is him, and only HIM that will be at the receiving end of it all. Game on Prezooooo !!!!!!”
